Disadvantages Of Biometric Security - It's Not A Panacea

Biometric security is no longer a novel concept and is finding application everywhere. Be it the residential or the commercial arena, biometric security devices are in use. However there are certain disadvantages of biometric security, in comparison to the conventional security devices. Each biometric security device works on a particular characteristic. While one device may ask for your fingerprints to permit access, other may monitor your hand measurements.

Most biometric security devices would consider your fingerprints as a password. This can have certain disadvantages. The first disadvantage is that the fingerprints of a person keep on changing from time to time. This can lead to the security devise having problem in identifying your fingerprint. The age and occupation of a person can also cause sensors difficulty in capturing a complete and accurate fingerprint image.

Other than that there are health concerns too involved in such biometric security. These security devices incorporate sensors, which may be touched by several individuals. Touching these sensors again an again can lead to health problems. Other disadvantages of fingerprints based security include public perceptions and privacy concerns of criminal implications.

There are several biometric devices that use the iris as a trait to permit access. Capturing the iris of some individuals can be quite difficult which is the major disadvantage of such biometric security. An iris can easily be covered with eyelashes, contact lenses, eyelids or even reflections from the cornea. Not many people are in the favor of this kind of biometric security because they fear that the scanning of their eye with a light source can be dangerous. This kind of biometrics requires the maximum attention and training.

Face is another popular biometrics for biometric security. The most prominent disadvantage of such biometric security is that the face can easily be disguised or even obstructed by hair, glasses, hats etc. This reduces the reliability of such biometric security to a great extent. Such kind of biometric security is sensitive to changes in lighting, expression, and pose. So who knows even you may be denied access into your home because you face is under a certain kind of lighting. Also the face keeps on changing over time so this can be another problem.

If your biometric security device uses your hand you may have to deal with some disadvantages. First of all the use of such biometric security requires some training. The biggest disadvantage of such biometric security is that it is not sufficiently distinctive over large databases.

The disadvantages of biometric security keep on varying from the biometric feature it makes use of. Nevertheless, biometric security is a great idea and still proes to be quite useful despite its few flaws.
